First Painting of the Great Seal

First Painting of the Great Seal

This large (45 x 66") oil painting is the work of an unknown artist. Commissioned in 1785, it has always hung in George Washington's pew in St. Paul's Chapel at Trinity Church in New York City.

The constellation of stars is correctly depicted in a natural formation, and
the rays of light are "breaking through a cloud" as they should be
(and as seen in other early realizations of the Great Seal).
